The Smiles and Hearts Foundation is rooted in the legacy of two remarkable women whose lives embodied joy, compassion, and unwavering service.

Michelle Agard Werner was known for her radiant smile — a light that brought joy, comfort, and a sense of belonging to everyone she met. Her smile reflected a heart full of kindness, humility, and a deep commitment to serving others. Although her time with us was brief, her legacy of love and joyful service endures in every life touched by this mission of hope and compassion.

Jane Boyd, whose heart for children, passion for education, and steadfast leadership turned a single act of giving into a lifelong mission of service. As an educator and servant leader, Jane devoted her life to empowering young people and uplifting communities. Her vision, faith, and relentless dedication continue to shape the work of the Foundation — a living testament to the power of a heart committed to serving others.

The Foundation’s logo stands as a powerful symbol of their shared legacy and the mission we carry forward. At its center, the smiling sun represents Michelle’s radiant joy — a beacon of hope and happiness that reflects the spirit of generosity and warmth we seek to share. The heart symbolizes Jane’s heart — a heart of service, leadership, and boundless love for others, especially the children and communities she served. Within the heart rests the white cross, standing as a symbol of faith, sacrifice, and the call to serve in the spirit of Christ. The cross reminds us that every act of compassion is an expression of love rooted in our faith and our mission to bring hope to the world. The woman’s silhouette honors the dignity, strength, and essential role of women as changemakers in their communities. It reflects the courage, leadership, and nurturing spirit of both Michelle and Jane, representing women who lead with compassion, strength, and a servant’s heart, Surrounding these central images are eight symbolic leaves, each bearing an African-inspired graphic that represents one of the Foundation’s core values:

  • Compassion     — A pair of open hands, symbolizing care, empathy, and the act of giving.
  • Education     — An open book, representing knowledge, growth, and the power of learning      to transform lives.
  • Dignity     — An upright human figure, reflecting self-respect, worth, and the      inherent value of every person.
  • Community     — A traditional African hut, signifying unity, shared purpose, and      cultural heritage.
  • Empowerment     — A lightbulb, emblematic of ideas, innovation, and the spark of      opportunity.

The remaining leaves frame these values with balance and harmony, forming a circle that signifies wholeness, unity, and an ever-growing mission of hope. Each leaf is drawn in an artistic style inspired by African motifs, honoring the vibrant culture of the communities we serve in Limpopo Province.

Together, these elements express the heart of our Foundation — a lasting tribute to Michelle’s joy, Jane’s heart, and a shared commitment to changing lives through love, compassion, and service.

Scripture: Matthew 25:40 (NIV)

“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

As the saying goes: 'There but for the grace of God, go I'—a recognition that it could be us in need, and that is why, with humility and gratitude, we serve knowing that every act of compassion honors Christ.

What began as a private effort to provide books, paper, pens, early literacy resources, and science tools evolved.

Creating

transformation, not just for the students and teachers at Reenpan but also for the donors and volunteers who witnessed firsthand the impact of their direct support.

Over 270 students and 10 teachers received materials aligned with the South African curriculum, including foundational phase learning tools, early childhood readers, and science experiment supplies. Smiles and laughter filled the classrooms as the boxes were opened, lessons began, and hope began to grow.

This trip was the spark that ignited the creation of the Smiles and Hearts Foundation, a nonprofit committed to sustaining and expanding this work. Inspired by that moment, we and our team established the foundation to continue uplifting rural communities through education, dignity, and safety for children and women. This story reminds us of the power of feet-on-the-ground, giving generously, and believing that even one visit can change lives.

At Smiles and Hearts Foundation, we believe that education is the spark that lights the path to opportunity. This year, we are excited to launch a powerful new initiative that brings hands-on science learning directly to the students and teachers of Reenpan Primary School in Limpopo Province, South Africa. In many rural South African classrooms, students are eager to learn about biology, chemistry, and physics, but lack even the most basic science tools. That’s why we are introducing five portable, reusable science kits designed to support over 25 curriculum-aligned experiments. Each kit will be paired with durable storage, teacher training, and delivery to the school site.

These kits are fully aligned with South Africa’s national CAPS curriculum and support the country’s growing focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). By giving learners a chance to explore science with their own hands, we’re opening the door to future careers, confidence, and critical thinking.

Our goal is  to fund all five kits and supporting materials. Here’s how you can help:
Mobile Science Labs:

GOAL: $7,500 = ORGANIZATION + KITS + TRAINING + DELIVERY

💡 $500 = teaching materials + lessons
🧪 $2,500 = 1 lab
🔺 $7,500 = funds the initiative

Every gift makes a difference. Your support will bring excitement, equity, and educational opportunity to a school ready to grow. Together, we can change lives—where smiles and hearts ignite a passion for science.

In the rural village of Sentrum, Limpopo, life unfolds amid rows of corrugated-iron shacks built from salvaged tin, wood, and plastic, offering little protection from scorching heat or winter cold. With no running water, families rely on shared taps and pit latrines, while electricity is often inaccessible. Children play in

dusty yards between unpaved paths, surrounded by a tight-knit but underserved community. Despite the daily hardships, resilience persists. The Smiles and Hearts Foundation exists for places like Sentrum—where dignity, education, and opportunity are scarce but deeply needed. Through compassion and faith in action, our mission is to uplift communities like this one, providing hope where it's been too long deferred.
